Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure in which the shape, size, and relationship of the nose to the face are evaluated. Various issues may be addressed, such as the bridge of the nose, the position of the tip, and the balance or asymmetry of the nostrils. Structural problems affecting the airway can also be addressed as part of the same treatment plan following an appropriate evaluation. [1]<\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

My goal is not to alter the nose as if it were an object independent of the face. It is essential to understand the relationship it forms with the forehead, lips, chin, and cheeks. Behind the desire for a \u201csmaller\u201d nose, there may sometimes be a desire for a higher bridge, sometimes for more support at the tip, and sometimes simply a different expectation regarding proportions. What do I consider before choosing a technique?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The face and nose are analyzed, and the skin, existing cartilage support, septum, and breathing complaints are evaluated together. It is also important for planning purposes to know about any previous surgeries, trauma, or procedures such as nasal fillers. Two noses that look similar from the outside may not require the same surgical procedures.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The open or closed approach describes how the surgeon accesses the tissues. The protective or structural approach, on the other hand, defines what will be done with those tissues. Combining these two distinctions under a single label may obscure the rationale behind the decision. The study on surface aesthetics and polygon analysis that my colleagues and I published examines the shape of the nasal surface in conjunction with the underlying anatomical structures. During the initial consultation, I listen to the patient\u2019s expectations regarding their appearance and, if applicable, any breathing-related complaints. The physical examination and photo analysis help me understand how these expectations relate to the patient\u2019s current anatomy. Any previous procedure reports and photos, if available, can contribute to the evaluation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Next, the possible approach, the limits of the expected change, and the follow-up process are discussed. When visual planning or simulation is used, it should be explained that this is a communication tool and does not constitute a guarantee of the exact surgical outcome. The resolution of early swelling and bruising is not the same process as the nose taking on its final appearance. The extent of the procedures performed and your individual healing characteristics can affect your return to daily life and how your appearance changes over time.
